Mega Evolution in Pokemon Champions — Every Mega & How to Unlock

Mega Evolution is live in Pokémon Champions under the initial Ranked Battle ruleset (Regulation M-A), and it changes how every team is built. You activate it through the Omni Ring — equip the right Mega Stone to your Pokémon, press R during move selection on Switch, and that Pokémon transforms for the rest of the battle. There are 59 Mega Evolutions at launch (60 physical forms counting both Meowstic variants), split between classic returning Megas and 23 brand-new forms introduced via Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

This guide covers how the mechanic works, every Mega Stone source, the full Mega roster, and which stones to chase first.

How Mega Evolution Works in Pokemon Champions

Mega Evolution in Champions uses the Omni Ring — a key item worn by your player character that functions like the Mega Ring from the mainline series. You do not need to earn or unlock it separately; it becomes available as part of normal progression and is required alongside the Mega Stone held by your Pokémon.

The activation flow during a battle:

  1. During your turn, open the move selection menu.
  2. The Omni Ring button appears inside the standard move menu — there is no separate screen.
  3. On Nintendo Switch, press R to trigger the Mega Evolution option.
  4. Select your move as normal. The Pokémon will Mega Evolve and use the chosen move in the same turn.
  5. If you change your mind before confirming, press R again to cancel the pending Mega Evolution.

A few hard rules apply in every battle:

  • You can only Mega Evolve one Pokémon per battle, regardless of how many Mega Stones your team carries.
  • Once triggered, the Mega Evolution slot is permanently consumed for that match.
  • A Pokémon that has Mega Evolved stays in Mega form for the rest of the battle, even if you switch it out.
  • Only fully evolved Pokémon can Mega Evolve. The sole exception to this rule is Pikachu.
  • No Legendary or Mythical Pokémon are currently available in Champions, so none can Mega Evolve.

The stat impact is consistent across all Mega forms: every Mega Evolution gains +100 Base Stat Total (BST) compared to its base form. HP never changes during Mega Evolution; the remaining +100 redistributes across other stats depending on the Pokémon.

What Is the Omni Ring?

The Omni Ring is Champions’ unified battle gimmick item. Right now it enables Mega Evolution, but the developers have confirmed it is designed to support additional gimmicks in future updates — Z-Moves, Dynamax/Gigantamax, and Terastallization are all listed as planned additions. Think of it as the slot that will eventually house every generation’s signature mechanic.

For Regulation M-A (valid through June 17, 2026), Mega Evolution is the only gimmick active. If you are playing after that date, check the Pokemon Champions Patch Notes Hub for updated ruleset information.

Regulation M-A: Why Mega Evolution Is in the Meta

Regulation M-A is the current ranked ruleset and explicitly permits Mega Evolution. This means every opponent you face in ranked can run a Mega, and building a team without one puts you at a 100-BST disadvantage in at least one matchup. If you are new to ranked play, the Pokemon Champions Ranked Explained Guide breaks down how rulesets rotate and what they mean for team building.

The mobile version of Pokémon Champions launches June 17, 2026 on iOS and Android. It launches into the same Regulation M-A environment, so mobile players will also need Mega Stones to compete in ranked from day one.

How to Get Mega Stones — All 5 Methods

Mega Stones are permanent reusable held items. You acquire each stone once and can use it across unlimited battles. Here is every confirmed acquisition method as of June 11, 2026.

Method 1: Frontier Shop (Most Stones)

Most Mega Stones are available in the Frontier Shop for 2,000 VP (Victory Points) each. VP is earned through ranked matches and missions. Ranked matches award 300 VP for a win and 150 VP for a loss at base rates, so the number of matches per stone depends on your win rate — roughly 7–13 matches depending on performance. Approximately 47 stones are available at this price point.

VP farming tip: complete daily missions alongside ranked play. Missions stack on top of your match VP and cut the grind per stone noticeably.

Method 2: Free Tutorial Reward (8 Stones, Zero VP)

Complete the Mega Evolution tutorial under Train > Battle Tutorials. Finishing it awards eight stones at no VP cost:

StoneFor
BeedrilliteBeedrill
GyaradositeGyarados
GarchompiteGarchomp
SteelixiteSteelix
HeracroniteHeracross
AggroniteAggron
ManectiteManectric
AbomasiteAbomasnow

Do this first. Eight free stones is a significant head start, and Garchomp and Gyarados alone are strong meta picks in Regulation M-A.

Method 3: Season M-1 Battle Pass (4 Stones)

The Season M-1 Battle Pass includes four Mega Stones split across free and premium tracks:

StoneForTrackTier
DragoniniteDragoniteFree1
MeganiumiteMeganiumFree27
EmboariteEmboarPremium4
FeraligiteFeraligatrPremium12

Do not spend VP on these four stones — even if Season M-1 has ended by the time you read this, check whether Season M-2 offers similar Battle Pass rewards before buying from the shop. See the Pokemon Champions Season Rewards Guide for up-to-date Battle Pass contents.

Method 4: Pokemon HOME Transfer (4 Stones)

If you played Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you can unlock four stones by transferring specific Pokémon via Pokémon HOME. Each transfer triggers a mailbox reward with the corresponding stone:

Transfer ThisReceive
ChesnaughtChesnaughtite
DelphoxDelphoxite
GreninjaGreninjite
Eternal Flower FloetteFloettite

This is the only way to get these four stones outside of potential future shop releases, so if you have Legends: Z-A save data, do the transfers before farming VP.

Method 5: Limited-Time Mailbox Events

Events distribute stones directly to your in-game mailbox with no VP required.

Active event (June 17 – early September 2026): All players on Switch and mobile can claim Raichu, Raichunite X, and Raichunite Y for free from their mailbox. The distribution window closes around September 1–2, 2026 depending on your timezone — check the in-game mailbox for the exact local deadline. Mega Raichu X is Electric-type with Electric Surge (sets Electric Terrain for 5 turns on entry; boosts grounded Electric moves and prevents sleep while active). Mega Raichu Y is Electric-type with No Guard (all moves hit with 100% accuracy, both ways). After the event ends, Raichunite X and Y will become available through the shop or other features at a later date.

Claim all three before the September deadline — missing this window means waiting for the shop restock.

How to Equip a Mega Stone

Once you own a Mega Stone, equipping it takes about thirty seconds:

  1. From the main menu, open Box.
  2. Select the Pokémon you want to hold the stone.
  3. Choose “Give an item to hold.”
  4. Press R on Switch to filter the item list to the Mega Stone category.
  5. Select the correct stone for that Pokémon.

A Pokémon holding the wrong Mega Stone simply will not Mega Evolve — it will hold the stone as a dead item. Double-check that the stone name matches the Pokémon (e.g., Beedrillite on Beedrill, not Beedrill holding Garchompite).

For more on how held items affect battle strategy, see the Pokemon Champions Held Items Guide.

Which Mega Stones to Prioritize

If you are new to Champions and working through the VP grind, here is a practical priority order based on competitive viability in Regulation M-A:

Get for free first (tutorial + Battle Pass): Garchomp, Gyarados, Beedrill, Dragonite, Meganium, Feraligatr, Heracross, Steelix. These cover several top archetypes and cost you nothing.

Buy from the shop next: Charizard X or Y depending on your team’s needs (Tough Claws vs. Drought), Gengar (Shadow Tag is a powerful trapping ability), Gardevoir (Pixilate Hyper Voice is a clean Doubles tool), Lopunny (Scrappy Fighting moves in Normal/Fighting is deceptively good). Each of these is 2,000 VP and generally earns its slot in competitive teams.

HOME transfers when possible: Greninja with Protean is one of the strongest new Megas for offensive pressure. Chesnaught’s Bulletproof gives it a blanket answer to ball and bomb moves. Do the transfers before grinding VP for these.

For full team recommendations using Mega Evolutions, see the Pokemon Champions Best Teams for Ranked and Best Doubles Teams VGC Guide.

Mystery Gift Codes and Mega Stones

As of June 2026, no mystery gift codes distribute Mega Stones. The two active codes grant Pokémon, not stones:

CodeRewardExpires
CHAMP10NMachampAugust 31, 2026
L12ARD0NPJCS26CharizardJuly 14, 2026

The Charizard from code L12ARD0NPJCS26 is worth redeeming since it gives you the Pokémon — you will still need to buy Charizardite X or Y from the shop separately. Check the Pokemon Champions Mystery Gift Codes List for any new codes added after this article was published.

Mega Evolution in Doubles (VGC-Style Play)

Champions supports Doubles battle formats, and Mega Evolution interacts with them in ways worth understanding before you build a team.

The one-Mega-per-battle rule still applies in Doubles — you get one Mega Evolution across both your active Pokémon, used once per match. This makes Mega selection more consequential than in Singles because the Mega has to pull weight while your second Pokémon sets up or provides support.

High-synergy pairings in Regulation M-A tend to work like this: a Mega with a field-setting ability (Mega Meganium’s Mega Sol for sun, Mega Abomasnow’s Snow Warning for hail, Mega Tyranitar’s Sand Stream for sand) paired with a weather abuser in the second slot. Alternatively, support Megas like Mega Audino (Healer) or Mega Gardevoir (Pixilate spread moves) combine well with physical attackers.

If you are building for Doubles specifically, the Best Doubles Teams VGC 2026 Guide goes deeper on team structures.

What’s Coming After Regulation M-A

Regulation M-A runs through June 17, 2026. The current confirmed roadmap for the Omni Ring includes Z-Moves, Dynamax/Gigantamax, and Terastallization as planned future additions — the intent is for Champions to become a multi-generation battle platform using the Omni Ring as the single gimmick interface.

What this means practically: Mega Stones you farm now will remain relevant as long as Regulation M-A (or any successor ruleset permitting Megas) is active. The stones are permanent items and do not expire. They will simply be ineligible in rulesets where Mega Evolution is not permitted — similar to how Dynamax items are formatted out of certain formats in the mainline series.

Keep an eye on the Patch Notes Hub for ruleset announcements.
